Venue: Naoroji Campus, TISS.

The modern city has been muse to a range of artists across the world. This talk by one of the most important contemporary Indian artists opens outwards from painting into the city with a range of key questions like: What keeps a painter interested in reflecting on a changing city over decades? What are the critical insights into the city process that the medium of painting yields?

What is at stake in the way bodies, objects and their configurations are depicted in painting the city? Sudhir Patwardhan presented a selection of works from his extensive body of work beginning in the 1970s on Mumbai, its periurban expansion, the life of labour, and spaces of infrastructure. The illustrated talk threw new light on the city as well as our modes of knowing and acting on it.
